Shadegg to Retire, Maybe Run for Senate

Tue, Feb 12, 2008 by Austin Cassidy

Campaign 2008

Congressman  John Shadegg of Arizona announced his retirement Monday.  He becomes the 29th House Republican to opt out of running for re-election this cycle.  A serious stumbling point for any GOP hopes of reclaiming Congress.

Some are speculating that Shadegg is preparing to launch a Senate campaign for John McCain’s seat.   Shadegg may be assuming that McCain will either be elected President and create an open seat… or that McCain will retire from the Senate if he doesn’t win the Presidential election.

Shadegg ran for House majority leader back 2006, when Republicans still controlled the House, finishing third behind now Minority Leader John A. Boehner and Minority Whip Roy Blunt.
