This is a fairly interesting article from the Washington Post about the Chinese Communist Party’s perspective on what Obama’s candidacy means for race in the United States - and, whether it means we’re farther ahead than China in terms of crossing some social differences.

This is a fairly interesting article from the Washington Post about the Chinese Communist Party’s perspective on what Obama’s candidacy means for race in the United States - and, whether it means we’re farther ahead than China in terms of crossing some social differences.

"Obama is a graduate from a first-class university," the editorial continued. "He is a symbol of assimilation rather than a representative of different races coming together. Obama did not break the superiority complex of white people. On the contrary, his appearance strengthened the superiority complex of white people."

Read the entire article here from the English version of People’s Daily Online . Although definitely the "official line" from the Party, it’s a viewpoint from a foreign government that places a lot of emphasis on social analysis and feels it has a lot riding on how our country operates.

As a side note, I know there are some people who dislike Obama because of how they view his race. However, all of the Republicans that I know are supporting McCain either because they really like him, or because they disagree with Obama on actual issues. Unlike some, I just can’t get that concerned about a cosmetic label that is an entirely social construction, and is often highly arbitrary anyway.

After his creative comments a couple of weeks ago concerning Barack Obama, why is Jesse Jackson still in charge of an organization which professes to work for the interests of the less fortunate in society? Can he honestly claim to not be taking a completely hypocritical perspective? Let’s itemize the ways:

Whispering a desire to perform genital mutilation on a presidential candidate, whom he is also supporting.

Using the “n-word”, widely considered offensive to billions, generally considered taboo in most of society, and frankly just bad taste.

Previously saying that Obama was “acting like he’s white” over the Jena Six case.

Not seriously apologizing for his widely reported comments that he also admitted to.

Here’s the well-worn clip of Jackson’s impression of Obama…

Lately, it seems that Jackson has taken an extremely adversarial stance, making race a divisive issue and generally acting like he might be suffering from some sort of dementia. If he doesn’t volunteer his resignation, Obama should consider it his obligation - out of common courtesy for the rest of us - to demand that Jackson step down from a position where he has anything to do with setting social policy.

A Dallas commissioner used the term “black hole” to describe a local government office that was losing documents. A black hole, of course, is a collapsed star from which no light or matter can escape. It’s a scientific term.

Well, a judge and another county commissioner, both African-American, didn’t see it that way. They immediately demanded apologies and blasted the man for using such a controversial term…

Quite honestly, I felt like I was watching something made by The Onion when I first saw this. The fact that this man is a County Commissioner is absolutely amazing to me.
